Our process

How we install artificial turf

Turf is one of those trades where the finished product looks the same on day one whether it was installed properly or not. The difference shows up in year two. Here’s the sequence we follow:

Remove and excavate

Old sod, rock, or whatever is there comes out, and we dig down enough to fit a real base rather than laying turf on top of grade.

Grade for drainage

The yard gets shaped so water runs away from the house and off the turf. This is the step that decides whether the lawn drains or holds water after a monsoon.

Compacted base

Base material goes in and gets compacted in lifts. A base that isn’t compacted properly settles, and settling is what causes the ripples and low spots you see in cheap installs.

Weed barrier

Fabric goes down over the finished base so nothing pushes up through the turf later.

Turf, seams and edging

Panels are laid with the blade direction matched, seams joined so they disappear, and the perimeter secured — usually against paver curbing on our builds.

Infill and groom

Infill is brushed into the fibers to weight the turf, keep the blades standing, and protect the backing. Pet installs get pet-specific infill. Then the whole lawn gets groomed.

Why drainage and base prep matter here

Pinal County soil is caliche — a hardpan layer that water does not pass through. That single fact is why turf installs fail out here more often than they do in other markets. If the base isn’t built to move water off the lawn, a monsoon leaves you standing water under the turf, and standing water is what causes the smell, the sinking, and the seams that lift.

We’d rather spend the extra day on excavation and compaction than come back in two years. It is the least visible part of the install and the part that decides whether you like your lawn in year five.
