A pondless waterfall gives you the sound and movement of running water with no exposed pond. Water runs down the waterfall or stream into a hidden underground reservoir and gets recirculated back through the system.

It’s the option most people land on when they want moving water in a smaller footprint — no algae control, no fish to care for, and no open water to fence off or child-proof. Less maintenance than a full pond, same effect from the patio.

Not every water feature needs to take over the backyard. Decorative fountains, stacked stone urns and smaller pondless features bring moving water to a courtyard, entry, patio or planting bed without the space a full pond needs.

These work best when they’re built into the landscape rather than set on top of it — tied into the decorative rock, pavers, planting and low-voltage lighting so the feature reads as part of the yard. The urn fountain above runs its pump and its lighting off the same low-voltage system as the rest of the property.

A water feature is a system, not an object. Here’s how one gets built:

Design & location

Feature type, size and placement chosen around the yard — where you’ll actually hear it, how much sun it takes, and how it relates to the patio and planting.

Excavation & prep

The area gets excavated and prepared for the pond, reservoir, stream or fountain base.

Pump, plumbing & filtration

Circulation components sized for the specific feature. Undersized pumps are the most common reason a water feature disappoints.

Liner, basin & construction

The water-holding and recirculating system gets built — UV-rated liner where liner is used, not film that turns brittle in two seasons.

Rock & finish work

Stone, decorative rock and the surrounding landscape are worked in so the feature looks like it belongs there.

Testing & adjustment

We fill it, run it, check flow and sound, and make the final adjustments before we leave.

What moves the number: excavation, access to the work area, rock and finish materials, pump and filtration, plumbing, electrical, lighting, and the overall design. A feature tucked into an existing landscape also costs differently than one built as part of a full backyard.

Water Feature Installation FAQ

Can you build a pond that holds fish?

We can build the pond and the circulation that gives fish a fair chance — adequate depth so the water isn’t heating straight through, shade planned around the sun the spot gets, and aeration. What we won’t do is promise fish survive a Casa Grande summer, because that comes down to stocking, ongoing water chemistry and day-to-day care after we leave. If keeping fish is the goal, say so up front and we’ll be straight with you about what the pond will ask of you.

Is a pondless waterfall lower maintenance than a full pond?

Considerably. You get the sound and movement of water without algae control, fish care, or a body of water to fence off, which is why it's a common choice for smaller yards.

What’s the difference between a pond and a pondless waterfall?

Can you add landscape lighting to a water feature?

Yes, and it’s worth doing — a water feature you paid for is invisible half the time you’re outside without it. We run feature lighting off the same low-voltage system as the rest of the yard, so the pump and the lights are on one setup.

Can a water feature be added to an existing landscape?

Yes. Most of the features we build go into yards that are already finished. It takes more planning around existing hardscape, irrigation and electrical, and there’s usually some finish work to blend the new rock and planting into what’s already there, but it’s common work.
